The ICFMH is offering a limited number of grants for food microbiologists from the least developed/most indebted/lowest income countries for attendance at the International Conference of the ICFMH (FoodMicro).


Eligible candidates

Candidates should be not more than 40 years of age and either registered for a higher degree (MSc, PhD or equivalent) or have obtained their PhD degree within the last 5 years by the deadline of the application. Candidates should have submitted a poster or oral abstract for any session of FoodMicro Conference (N.B. you should submit your abstract, but not pay your registration fee.). We will also consider applications from postgraduate students studying outside their own country, but in this case we might cover Conference registration and accommodation only.


We define the least developed/most indebted/lowest income countries according to the following list (applications from people living in other developing countries can be considered, but those from the list below will be given priority):

Afganistan, Angola, Armenia, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo Dem. Rep, Congo Rep., Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, El Salvador, Equitorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kiribati, Korea Dem. Rep, Kosovo, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao PDR, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Micronesia Fed. States, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Philippines, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Syrian Arab Republic, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vietnam, West Bank and Gaza, Yemen Rep., Zambia, Zimbabwe.



Air tickets (or rail tickets) of successful applicants will be purchased by ICFMH, and the cost of registration and accommodation will be covered as well. In addition, a sum of 500 € will be paid to each successful applicant on arrival at the Conference, towards their day-to-day expenses, and the cost of obtaining travel insurance. If a visa is required for visiting the country, then an extra 100 € will be paid to cover this.

The ICFMH Mobility Grant does not pay the cost of travel to the starting airport or rail station in the home country nor from the airport or rail station to the conference venue (which should be taken from the 500 € expenses allowance). We do not provide health or accident insurance coverage. Grant holders are responsible for all issues relating to health insurance for themselves and any family members during the travel and the stay in the county in which the FoodMicro is held.

The online application system for FM Travel Grants will be open till April 30th. Please register as new applicant in the ICFMH website (here).


Application content

The application form is completed on-line and shall be accompanied by the following documents, all written in English:

  • a short curriculum vitae (CV, max 3 pages)
  • a copy of the abstract submitted for a poster or oral presentation to the FoodMicro Conference;
  • a signed statement from the immediate supervisor, countersigned by the Head of Department to confirm that he/she is a postgraduate student, and that the work reported in the abstract has been carried out entirely or principally by the candidate.
  • an estimate of the cost of return (air or rail) travel to the Conference.

All documents described above should be combined in a unique pdf file (maximum of 3 MB) to be uploaded to the online application system.


Evaluation process

Applications will be evaluated by a committee consisting of members of the ICFMH executive board and FoodMicro organisers. Applicants will be informed of the disposition of their application before the deadline for the FoodMicro early registration deadline by email message from the ICFMH.
